An expert in recruitment and selection specialized in IT recommends the best ways to position yourself in social networks for those looking for work in the area.
With a 310% growth in Brazil in 2020, according to data from Valor Investe, the opprtunities for Information Technology (IT) have been irreversibly enhanced in the market since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, with growth of 1.2% and opening of 70,000 positions per year due to the need to expand the actions of companies and professionals in a remote home office and work regime – which require investments in IT.
The evaluation is from the expert Christina Curcio, phD and master in Technology and founder of Icon Talent, a company that selects talents and performs selection processes for customers of all segments, especially for Information Technology in Brazil and abroad. With 23 years of IT experience, she lists six essential tips for those looking for a place on the market.
1) 1) Attractive profile and updated curriculum
Many IT professionals wonder what would make their profile more attractive on social media for recruiters. First of all, it is necessary to maintain an up-to-date portfolio of projects, as well as your curriculum and profile in the Linkedin. Updated data also includes contacts and professional references, to facilitate the search for the one who is recruiting on specialized websites. In addition, objectivity in the description of the activities and positions desired, with details of the courses, certifications, languages and professional experiences, in addition to the average wage claim, are valuable tips. It is important that the "open to work" candidate, in search of new job opportunities, update their professional information and share their contact number.
2) Search for the best positions
The candidate must always evaluate the best opportunities, listing the companies and positions of interest. Do not register for any vacancy, nor waste your time. Search for recruitment and selection professionals and forward your updated curriculum to vacancies you know are open. In addition, you must always have listed the vacancies for which you have applied. Unfortunately, some companies create "fake profiles" of vacancies in search of curriculum bank. Always search for the websites of companies that have the updated positions on their sites.
3) Outside the comfort zone
For those who do not have much experience in the IT area, the tip is to reinforce the formative and communication aspects. Focus your efforts on getting to know beyond the IT area. Attend events and conference courses in market technologies, take courses on these technologies, study English and have an excellent Portuguese. Develop a portfolio of projects, always study and get out of the comfort zone. Do not be afraid to sell yourself as a professional, and proactively introduce yourself to recruiters.
4) Soft skills on the rise
Investing in permanent qualification, with courses and certifications updated, good mastery of the standard Portuguese language and other languages, and a networking with professionals in the area are also valuable tips, according to the expert. Investing in so-called soft skills is fundamental to the personal and emotional side of the professional, enhancing the team relationship that reflects in the delivery of the work. A more balanced professional is able to set priorities, strengthen their strengths, minimize their weaknesses and not easily shake with the pressures and day to day conflicts.
In addition to teamwork and emotional intelligence, the soft skills on the rise include creativity, communication, flexibility, adaptability, autonomy, dynamism, resilience, proactivity, problem solving, critical sense, leadership and ownership (which can be interpreted as "owner feeling", the differentiated mindset of those who want to see the organization thrive, ensuring it growth, stability and profit).
5) Study a foreign language
Today with the formalization of remote work, many opportunities are being opened by Brazil and especially in other countries. The need to speak English or Spanish is more than a reality. Even if you do not have fluent English, it is important that the candidate can have good communication and, when conducting an interview, do not be ashamed of not knowing one or another sentence. The evaluators usually observe the application and dedication of the candidate when striving to conduct the interview in English.
It is normal that languages, when not spoken or practiced, are forgotten by professionals. So do not be ashamed and make an effort, as this is taken into consideration by recruiters. It is normal that many candidates get nervous when doing an interview in another language. So relax, train and continue your studies!
6) What not to do in a selection process
- Speak ill of the companies in which you worked
- Incomplete or outdated curriculum
- Fail to deliver technical test or delay delivery
- Delay or unpreparedness for the interview
- Increase your knowledge regarding a specific technology
- Lack of emotional control during the interview
- Lack of practice in the language described in the curriculum
- Lack of professional references
- Vague or very long answers
- Different wage claim in the interview
